High society and youth collide in Zimmermann’s dark yet playful collection Class Of 2013. Things are not as they appear, with designer Nicky Zimmermann revealing the subversive, eccentric and salacious nature behind an otherwise refined world.
Colour is precise with a focus on monochrome punctuated by an unexpected mix of pretty and strong hues. Originating in vintage upholstery and wall paper, rambling florals join hand-written French letters and embroidered checks in a distinctive union of prints. Pencil-drawn emblems, chandeliers and ribbons by Brisbane artist Courtney Brims are reminiscent of classroom daydreams.
Rich textures are indulgent in custom woven brocade, metallic leather and high-shine coating. Opulence is almost defiant with pearl beading, appliqued bows and accentuated ruffles. Neoprene bonded lace is tailored sharply into backless, halter-neck dresses and cigarette pants with latticed panelling. Restrained from behind by straps and buckles, bodices take their cue from faux-tuxedo fronts.
A dichotomy of innocence and sophistication, private school blazers and pleated sports tunics take on modern construction as papery fabrications in buoyant, voluminous shapes add lightness to the uniform structure. Silk draped into liquid silhouettes is sexy and feminine while athletic details, neck ties and exposed zips hint at schoolyard antics.
Accessories are dominated by pointed T-bar pumps, kitten heel boots and leather backpacks. Zimmermann worked collaboratively with jewellery label ManiaMania to create chunky fob chains, crest-embossed pendants and signet rings.
Elitism meets irreverence in Zimmermann’s inimitably contemporary collection; Class Of 2013 calls for an abandonment of inhibition, possessing a strong attitude and sense of fun that is intoxicating.
Zimmermann’s Class of 2013 collection will be arriving in stores from July 2013.
