Makeup mastermind Napoleon Perdis returned to his native Australia to host a series of ‘Beauty to Move You Master Class’ events around the country. An insider look at expert techniques, makeup trends and his own beauty tricks, Napoleon covered his favourite looks for clients, editorial, the runway and trends during the in-depth sessions. Couturing was there to capture the creative and practical beauty skills from the master himself. Read on to find out how to recreate the beautiful looks.
Everlasting elegance was the inspiration for the master class with bold brows, heavy contouring and a sheen polish taking center stage. Working his tips and tricks to prove just how flawless his makeup application is, Napoleon puts his best products on display during the tutorials.
Creating the perfect smokey eye for his partner Soula-Marie Perdis, Napoleon treated the audience to some of his best advice when applying colour around the face. Starting with Color Disc in Midnight Express, Napoleon gently applied the shimmery silver colour over the eyes and filled the waterline for extra drama. Next, he used China Doll Gel Eyeliner Yin on the top and bottom lash line, filling the inner corner of the eyes. Adding a touch of Crème de la Crème Lava, this smudge-proof, longwearing gel eyeliner glides on easy and sets to a highly pigmented finish. Finishing the eyes with Long Black Mascara, Napoleon set the look with big bold brows using his Browtox and brush to fill in spaces.
“Eyebrows frame the eye and give it a structure to work within, it is like a boundary for the eye shadow,” said Napoleon, “It gives the eye that little bit more of a fresher build so I like to bring it down further and extend the brow slightly.”
Napoleon applied Mosaic Powder Flushing to the apples of the cheeks for a peachy tone while noting those who want a pink/plum tone should use Mosaic Powder Blushing.
A quick lip liner in Perfect Poppy was applied before finishing with DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Hara. An easy trick to applying lip liner is to cover the outer corners with product too. “There’s nothing worse than blanks,” he quipped.
The second look of the evening was applied on Liana Perdis, the mother of the talented Napoleon. Talking us through the preparation of the skin, Napoleon’s famous “not to prime is a crime” slogan was emphasised during the demonstration. Autopilot Radiance Boosting Mask is applied to mature skin before working foundation and concealer. The mask drenched the skin with oil without having an oily texture that can be too wet looking.
“It’s got a beautiful line blurring effect so if the skin is looking tired or rough from uneven skin texture, the mask beautifully blurs the skin and kick starts the road to looking flawless,” said Napoleon. “For a professional tip, mix the mask with your favourite foundation and concealer as it contributed to your foundation having the flawless airbrush look.”
Massaging the product into Liana’s skin, the mask stimulates blood flow and is a form of lymphatic drainage in the face, leaving the skin looking refreshed.
Opting for the Mosaic Powder Blushing for those pink/plum tones, Napoleon brushed the blush along Liana’s upper cheeks for a slight contour. What we loved most about her look were the lip products used. Pairing Lip Pencil in Mauve Mix to line the lips, Napoleon swiped his infamous Mattetastic Lipstick in Ava for a pop of colour. The HydraTechnology provides long-lasing, intense hydration for a strong pout while Sodium Hyaluronate keeps lips soft, smooth and hydrated. With added benefits of Vitamin E, the long wear lipstick retains moisture and promotes suppleness so lips won’t dry out.
Talking us through the benefits of his Ultimate Contour Palette, Napoleon demonstrated just how perfect this three-in-one face sculptor is for every skin tone. The contouring shade adds depth and definition, a rosy blush creates a healthy hue and a shimmering highlight will diffuse light – all this in one easy application palette.
“I like to work the contour into the brow, inner corner of the eye and bring it in by brushing over the nose and upper lip, making sure the focus feature is the main attraction,” said Napoleon.
Pointing to the T-zone and section around the eyes, the ‘focus feature’ is where light shines on your face most naturally and the most common area observed on any face.
The final look of the night was created using some of the brands biggest sellers and is easily recreated at home. Using the Nude U Eyes, Cheeks and Brows Palette, Napoleon curated a selection of neutral tones for the eyes, transitioning the look from day to night almost effortlessly. Adding extra definition to the look, Napoleon shared his secrets to applying mascara for the ultimate lashes!
Step 1: It is important to fill lashes in the inner corners and get the little hairs that you can’t see
Step 2: Use Flat Shader Brush 10b in natural bristle to paint each lash and separate it with the brush
Step 3: Paint the top lashes from as close to the lash line as possible and finish with the inner corners
“It’s all about building the definition around the eye area and not worry about clumping. I like to separate the lashes later using my Long Black Mascara,” says Napoleon.
Opting for three lip products at once, the makeup genius worked with the audience to instruct how to apply each layer of product onto clients’ lips. Offering a tip to overdraw lips at this point, Napoleon applied Lip Pencil Mauve Minx around the lips to create a border followed by Mattetastic Lipstick in Ava for full coverage. A hint of Luminous Lip Veil Velvet Revolution was applied to the center third of the lips for a slight shine.
