Joining sister venue in Fairfield, Chapati restaurant, nestled in Melbourne’s CBD, is a stylish addition to the city’s vibrant dining scene, blending modern decor with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The interior features sleek lines, minimalist design, and an open layout that allows for a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience. The focus is on providing a modern environment without sacrificing the comfort that comes with enjoying hearty, home-cooked meals. The design is a nod to both traditional and contemporary elements, making it an ideal spot for casual dining or a special evening out.

The menu at Chapati showcases an impressive range of Indian flavors, all executed to perfection. We started with the Dhai Puri, crispy shells filled with sweet yoghurt, tamarind chutney, and green chutney—an explosion of textures and flavors that set the tone for the meal. The Prawn Koliwada, coated in a spiced batter and fried until golden, was another highlight, offering a delicate balance of spice and crispiness.

The Tandoori Mushroom, spiced button mushrooms cooked in the tandoor, and the Chicken Tikka Tandoori, made with free-range chicken marinated in classic tandoori spices, were both wonderfully charred and packed with flavor. The Gun Powder Potatoes, roasted in ghee with the perfect blend of spices, were a comforting side dish, while the Prawn Malibar, cooked in coconut, curry leaves, and tamarind, was rich and aromatic. For mains, the Rogan Josh was a melt-in-your-mouth delight, and the Butter Chicken, true to its Delhi roots, was creamy, rich, and utterly satisfying.

What truly sets Chapati apart is its commitment to quality ingredients. The use of free-range chicken, alongside other top-quality ingredients, reflects the restaurant’s dedication to both authenticity and excellence. This care in sourcing ingredients is a tribute to the owner’s mother, whose traditional recipes are lovingly passed down and showcased in every dish. The flavors are well-balanced, each bite demonstrating the love and effort put into crafting each plate.

The innovative cocktails at Chapati also deserve special mention. Drawing inspiration from Indian flavors, the drinks feature a beautiful blend of spices and fresh ingredients, creating concoctions that are both refreshing and surprising. For those seeking a more intimate experience, the second-floor bar, Daaru, offers a solid cocktail and wine list, along with an array of small dishes that reflect the flavors of Chapati’s main menu. With reasonably priced offerings, Chapati is a wonderful addition to Melbourne’s dining scene—combining exceptional food, a chic ambiance, and inventive cocktails in one unbeatable package.
