It’s his maison now. One of fashion’s most polarising, talented, and contentious designers, John Galliano has made his return to the fashion world after leaving Christian Dior in a storm of controversy with his first haute couture collection for Maison Martin Margiela. Showing in London well before Paris Haute Couture fashion week (perhaps in a way to remove his collection from comparison with his former employers), the pieces were heralded as triumph for the French fashion house and also, a return to form for the designer (who hasn’t shown his work in over four years).
The collection maintained Margiela’s mix of gothic and regal, but with an added touch of Galliano’s signature rock n roll aesthetic. The runway was peppered with longtime friends and supporters such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, with Kate saying that the closing “”…red dress gave me the shivers”.
While there were doubts that Galliano should have been handed the reigns, especially given the label is famed for hosting anonymous designers, all reservations were gone when the man himself stepped out at the end of the show. Never one to leave an opportunity for a tongue in cheek moment, an ironic use of ‘Hey Big Spender’ boomed throughout the audience for the finale walks.

Enjoyed #MargielaMonday. It’s not often that second chances are given in the fashion industry. pic.twitter.com/IOrB6o2976 — Joy Ilise Battaglia (@JoyIlise) January 13, 2015

Incidentally, the group who owns Maison Martin Margiela is called Only The Brave group. A brave coup indeed #GallianoForMargiela #fashion — Stéphanie Khouy (@MlleaDubai) October 6, 2014
