Sarah Green is unashamed about her love of all things vintage and all things jewellery, so much so that she’s built a successful business on the back of her passions. As the curator of Sarah Vintage, she collects outstanding vintage pieces, contemporary clothing, and jewellery of her own design together in her words, to ” celebrat[e] the beauty and glamour of the vintage era, and mixing it in with modern [pieces]”. We speak to her about the inspiration behind the store, her tips to find good vintage, and what pieces every woman should have in their collection.
What prompted the creation of Sarah Vintage?
I was looking for a change from my catering and events background (a mid life crisis maybe?) and before I knew it I had opened my first store in William St in Paddington Sydney 10 years ago, selling my jewellery and vintage original pieces along side modern clothes that allowed the pieces to stand out.
I have always loved vintage style – especially the 1950’s and 1960’s – and started playing around, making jewellery from vintage pieces especially with glomesh. These became my signature earrings. At that time there was also a gap in the market. No one else was dedicating a whole store to vintage costume jewellery so I thought, “let it be me!”
What inspires the curation of pieces?
I hate to admit this, but my mother always said “they dont make things like they used to”…she was right. The original vintage pieces have been made so well that I am in awe of how they still look so amazing 50 years on. I want to preserve them so they live another 50. It is also a small contribution to being environmentally friendly…and they look so damn good on!
What are your tips for finding good vintage pieces?
Well my first tip is to come to my store or check out my website! The next is to raid your mothers or grandmother’s jewellery boxes and closets.
Do you have a favourite piece available at Sarah Vintage right now?
My favourite piece is this silvertone necklace worn with the Charlie Biker black leather jacket also available in store and online.
What pieces of jewellery should everyone have in their collection?
I think everyone should have a pair of diamond studs, pair of vintage rhinestone drop earrings (for night), at least one fabulous cocktail ring, a statement necklace in gold and one in silver, chandelier earrings, and a pair of (coloured) vintage clip on earrings that accentuate your eyes.
You’ll find Sarah Vintage at 123 Victoria Ave Albert Park, VIC, and is open Wed to Sunday, 11 – 5pm or by appointment.
