Peter Morrissey is a name synonymous with style. After 31 years in the industry, he continues to innovate, inspire and create amazing pieces that are covetable additions to any wardrobe. Having recently released his 2013 Summer Eyewear collection, Peter spoke with Couturing about the collection, style staples, and where he draws inspiration from.
Your collection for this summer includes aviators, wayfarers, and also modern twists on rectangular and rounded frames; what makes these shapes special to you? “I think design is best when it’s classic. Designs should be based on needs more than desires. Needs are classics that everyone looks good in, and desires are what everyone calls trends”.
Some of the optic frames seemingly reference the 50s; were you inspired by that era? I take inspiration from everywhere. “Optical frames should say, “These are an extension of my personality”, not “I need prescription glasses”. My styling gives your face another expression through eyewear”.
Do you have a favourite piece in the collection? “I try to make every piece in the collection a favourite, but if I had to pick one it’s Entourage – my version of the slick, classic aviator”.
What is especially great about the collection is although the designs include amazing finishes, and are made from quality products, they’re priced incredibly affordably. You’ve had great success with your diffusion lines, Man and Woman; is the pricing inspired by that? “If you want to fashion people’s lives, you’ve got to understand what people’s lives are like. Therefore, my prices are always appropriate for the times. The major difference with Morrissey and other brands at a similar price point is that I won’t sacrifice quality for bottom line, I continue to use the finest materials and componentry despite having the most affordable collection ever”.
You’ve had an amazing career, and have been named FHM’s Man of the Year for design, and Designer of the Year by Cleo, to name a few of your accolades; what has been your personal career highlight? “At the moment, the fact I am still going after 31 years and that the public still support, love, and believe in my brand [is my highlight]”.
Along with a great pair of sunglasses, what are your top fashion picks for the upcoming summer? “A great long maxi dress, a fabulous white shirt, and chic tailored shorts with heels. For men, a navy suit jacket, a great pair of jeans, and a white or navy shirt”.
