There is something about the ritual of doing a face mask that I love. It just feels decadent. It could be that I love the way the right mask makes my skin feel or, maybe it’s something about the forced ten or twenty minutes of relaxation? Perhaps it’s because you might think you look way more attractive with a mud mask on? I don’t know why that is, but I’m always tempted to do a “selfie” every time I have one on. I refrain of course but who’s to say that it might not happen one day!
Masks are great for Winter and great for hydrating the skin when the wind and cold temperatures wreak havoc on your skin. I’ve picked out some of my favourite masks for this winter.
Aspect Exfoliating Clay Mask $55
This mask is the best exfoliating mask I have ever used. The clay base draws out impurities whilst the Salicylic and Lactic Acid exfoliates. The mask also contains Niacinamide which purifies and calms skin as well as Canadian Willowherb Extract which also soothes and is a powerful antioxidant, that helps fight free radicals and ageing. This mask also has a stable Vitamin C which helps increase radiance and brightness of the skin. When I use this product my skin looks porcelain smooth (aside from a few blemishes and imperfections) and my skin is brighter and healthier looking. I really notice a change in pore size and breakouts are reduced. I also find that continued use of this mask has steadily improved my skin, so not just an instant gratification product.
Also for those who have oily skin, the Kaolin in this product is mattifying and will help reduce oil over time. And the best bit, Aspect products contain no SLS, Parabens, harsh preservatives, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum or Artificial Fragrances and is not tested on animals.
Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask $30
Yep this price tag is hard to beat and so is the product. Perfect for dry winter skin. Leave on overnight if your skin is in need of some serious T.L.C otherwise pop on for a quick burst of hydration. Perfect to use around the eyes also. What makes this mask so effective is the rich plant oils, essential fatty acids and lipids that help to repair the surface layer of dry skin. The plant and vitamin based antioxidants in this mask help to soothe red or sensitive skin and is great for those wanting to tackle early signs of ageing such as fine lines and inflammation.
Glamglow Power Mud $75
So you’ve tried Youthmud, Thirstymud and Supermud and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better here comes Powermud. This mask is a little more pricey but worth every cent. This clay mud to oil cleanser begins as a mask then transforms to an oil once lubricated. This is more than your standard cleanse, it is a deep purifying and detoxifying clean. Perfect for those who love to wear a lot of makeup during the work week, or just those who love to cleanse. Don’t be concerned, this mask/cleanser is really gentle and leaves skin smooth and soft. And yes, this mask is perfect for all skin types. Even oily skin.
REN Clearcalm Clarity Restore Mask $59
For lovers of simplicity in environmentally friendly packaging, this is a great mask for breakout prone skin. This product by REN, is french clay based, antibacterial and contains salicylic acid, colloidal sulfur and willow bark extract. Which is a breakout triple treat. Kaolin is in there too for your wonderful anti ageing and soothing benefits. I find this is one of the best masks for speeding up the recovery and soothing a red angry breakout and after applying to the troubled area for at least ten to twenty minutes, I can see the breakout has calmed down significantly. The Clearcalm range from REN is aimed at sensitive skin, however this product has a lot of flower extracts (namely Lavender oil) which some can find irritating.
Eve Lom Moisture Mask $130
Now this luxe mask is aimed at those with dehydrated skin or those just wanting to brighten up a dull tired completion. A little ‘tingly’’ on application, this mask really plumps up skin and smooths out fine lines caused by lack of water. This mask is often recommended for overnight use, which works fantastically. What I love most about this product is the little bit of ritual and the sensory experience when applying it after cleansing and going to bed feeling pampered. Waking up is even better, when your skin is glowing, firm and hydrated. This mask contains hyaluronic acid which plumps, vitamin e to nourish and phytic acid to brighten. This mask is also perfect for soothing and restoring skin that has become sensitised.
