Monday night celebrated the preview of local Melbourne label, Micky In The Van’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection at The Provincial Hotel in Fitzroy. A fitting setting for the whimsical label, the antique, blush interior of the hotel encapsulated the preview perfectly. Paired with dainty cups of tea from the uber-chic Deitea and beautiful floral arrangements scattered throughout the room, it was an evening of playful elegance and pure style.
Behind the label is designer and retail expert, Estelle Michaelides, whose keen eye for fashion and design has put her on the fast track to success. After opening up her own eponymous boutique on Smith Street, Collingwood and simultaneously developing her own millinery practice, Estelle built and developed her skills in the business of fashion. Getting to know the market, suppliers and manufacturers helped her prepare for the launch of the label, whilst her creative edge and playful style brought the label to life.
The name is inspired by her nephew Micky, and is dedicated to all of the times he asks her to build a campervan from chairs and rugs in order to take him ‘sightseeing’ as he loves camping and also spends most of his time playing with the camper accessories in the RV. This is a personal quirk that continues to add to the innovative label.
Although most designers opt to go overseas for garment production, Estelle is passionate about sustaining the garment production industry in Melbourne with all of her pieces manufactured locally. Ranging from bombers to ruffled dresses, floral prints to digital prints, shrugs and even a Bullet Not Proof Vest, the collection is playfully chic and stylish, as well as being wallet friendly. Estelle’s millinery pieces also featured throughout the a/w preview, with inspiring and innovative designs fit for the Melbourne races; most definitely worth taking note of for those upcoming fancier months.
With the combined ambiance of the collection, venue, refreshments and music, Micky In The Van’s Autumn/Winter 2013 preview was a fashionable success. A perfect end to a Monday night.
