Upon entering the Mind Body Spirit festival earlier this year I was swept up in a rush of people toting show bags and pushing through the crowds to stalls promoting crystals, health foods and palm readers. As I walked past an enclosed tent I noticed an elderly man wrapped in white cloth and beckoning people in. His calm nature was a breath of fresh air amongst the pushing and prodding of the crowds and I felt myself slowly being drawn towards his energy. This man was Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj and under his guidance the ten minutes I spent in that tent gave me inner peace and clarity that I carried with me for the duration of the day. Maharaj represented the Science of Spirituality, a non-profit-non-denominational organisation dedicated to spirituality, peace and service to humanity. With it’s International headquarters in Delhi and numerous centres all over the world the organisation teaches a natural method of meditation that can spread to all areas of your life.
He first spoke of the benefits meditation can have on your life and how it doesn’t just come to you overnight, you must practice and allow yourself the time to sit in silence even if it is for five minutes when you wake in the morning. We were then told to look but not stare at the blank wall in front of us displaying a glowing red light and listened as he spoke serenely about letting go of the past, not thinking of the present and relaxing. Although you may have a perceived idea of what meditation is unfortunately sitting crossed legged in a secluded place and humming whilst trying to think of nothing just isn’t going to cut it. Meditation is a state of thoughtful awareness and allows a profound deep peace to occur when the mind is calm and silent. In reality you could be at your work desk and practice the art of meditation just as well as somebody sitting in a lotus position next to a waterfall.
Before you roll your eyes at the thought of taking the time out of your already jam packed hours in a day to practice meditation, think again. Meditation is seen by a number of researchers as potentially one of the most effective forms of stress reduction and has the ability to improve your quality of life. Created in Eastern cultures over several thousand years ago the art of meditation has been developed, trialed and refined over the countless generations. Adapted by today’s society mediation is a proven technique to not only help de-stress and clear your mind yet decrease health care costs by solving underlying stress and anxiety related illnesses. Meditation guides you to focus on the present and live in the now rather than dwell on the unchangeable past or undetermined future. With the countless benefits meditation has on your mind and health you have nothing to lose by trying it today. Whether you want to join up with one of the numerous meditation organisations in Melbourne, buy a “how to” DVD or complete Meditation training online your options are endless.
