The 2019 Australian Hair Fashion Awards were held, celebrating the best in hair, fashion and beauty. In its 27th year, the Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFAs) partnered with Dyson as its major partner and the celebration culminated in Dyson Styling Ambassadors presenting a hair runway show demonstrating how to create amazing styles with the award-winning Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer in front of the industry, doing what they do best. We caught up with Dyson Ambassador, Joey Scandizzo to talk about the hottest hair trends and what inspired his contribution to the AHFAs.
As one of Australia’s leading hair stylists, what are you seeing as the hottest hair trends this year? Colour, cut/style.
With the cooler weather settling in, we need to finesse a more polished hair-do that withstands the winter elements – rain, hail or shine. My clients also no longer desire highly styled and perfect curls – it’s all about loose, healthy-looking locks, and embracing natural texture.
What was your inspiration for the runway at the Australian Hair fashion Awards in 2019?
I took inspiration from a warrior princess. The white mesh moulded to my models head symbolised a helmet. I’ve been very inspired by textures and shapes lately so I wanted to create the helmet out of broken up and moulded hair. I wanted to tie the remainder of the hair up and off the face in a sleek ponytail to keep the theme strong.
As a Dyson styling ambassador, tell us what you love about the Dyson styling technology?
I often see the damage that extreme heat can have on hair. Most of my clients are shocked to hear that the extreme heat used by some dryers can cause irreparable damage to their hair. That’s why I love my Dyson styling products which have been game changing for the styling industry. Both the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer and the Dyson Airwrap™ styler have been engineered with Intelligent Heat Control to ensure hair isn’t exposed to extreme heat – I feel this helps give hair the shine it deserves. They’re also fast drying, super quiet and light in the hand which is a real time-saver. In my opinion, this increases productivity in the salon and enhances the styling experience for our clients.
Do you have any go-to easy styles that can be created using the Dyson styling technology?
The Dyson Airwrap™ styler is so versatile, you can achieve voluminous curls, natural waves and a smooth blow-dry finishes, all with the one tool. My go-to look with the Dyson Airwrap™ styler is a sleek, glamorous curl. For a more voluminous look, I like to alternate the barrels to create curls that bounce off each other and use a comb to soften the hair.
As a hairstylist, what do the Australian Hair Fashion Awards mean to you?
The Australian Hair Fashion Awards are so important to me, as it’s a chance for stylists to come together and recognise the best talent in Australia. It was amazing to be nominated for two awards and returning to the stage as a Dyson styling ambassador was very special.
What are your top tips to keep your hair well maintained as we head into the cooler months?
It’s important to invest in styling technology that prevents extreme heat and helps protect natural shine – that’s why I recommend the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer which in my opinion is the best hair dryer on the market-. The Dyson Airwrap™ styler barrels are game-changing if you want to create consistent curls, even on shorter hair. It’s amazing to think that so many people have been compromising on the condition of our hair by using extreme heat to create the styles they want. Thankfully, Dyson engineers and scientists solved this problem with the Dyson Airwrap™ styler which is an extremely versatile tool which can be used to create nearly any style you want, using only air. I also suggest my clients shampoo less in the winter months, as the cool weather can cause your scalp to become dry and itchy. Shampooing can remove the natural oils your scalp produces to keep moisturised, making this worse.
