Getting spring races ready does not have to be complicated, you just need to be well prepared. To simplify part of your routine, Couturing have put together a fool proof tanning guide, so you can flaunt a fake and long lasting tan!
Bronzed hues and golden glows were predominant throughout the catwalks at the SS15 shows, including Mary Katrantzou, House of Holland, David Koma and Julian McDonald. So to be on trend this year, you need to possess a healthy looking radiance. To achieve an even tan, it is crucial to prep your skin thoroughly prior to application. No one will know you’re faking it.
If you aren’t moisturising daily everyday, this needs to change! It is crucial to apply body lotion at least once daily in order to make sure your skin is hydrated. This will also come in handy when the races come around, as lush, hydrated skin will ensure your tan is applied evenly and patch-free.
Exfoliate before you self tan. This prolongs your tan by removing dead skin cells. Using a good exfoliator, gently scrub all over your body. We like Grown Alchemist’s ‘Purifying Body Exfoliant: Pearl, Peppermint and Ylang Ylang’. As the company is passionate about natural-organic alchemy, they have formulated a natural line of products combining only the upmost ingredients. The revitalising body exfoliant is formulated with a nutrient and antioxidant rich blend of pearl bioactive and botanical ingredients that remove skin cells gently, leaving skin tangibly softer, smoother and deeply cleansed. The Aragonite and Concholin proteins from the pearl remove dead skin cells, softly decongesting the skin, enhancing moisture absorbtion and cell turn over. Your skin will look much more even toned and soothed without irritation after use.
Polish before you tan. A body polish is ideal for buffing and refining your skin to ensure your tan lasts even longer. St. Tropez Body Polish is perfect for this, as it is designed with smooth round beads that gently roll over the surface of your skin to avoid a patchy tan. It also helps your tan fade evenly, not in peely patches that look incredibly tacky. Apply this 2-3 times a week.
When it comes to application, it is best to apply straight after you have showered (ensure your skin is completely dry). Use a mitt- this is non negotiable. This enables a smooth and even application, as well as clean hands! Be sure to use your tan sparingly over your knees and elbows.
We like Model Co’s Natural Self Tanning Mousse, a new product from their chemical free line. The mousse is infused with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E and is free from parabens, artificial preservatives, synthetic colours, fragrances and PEGs. It uses a sugar based DHA. It is suitable for all skin types (including those with sensitive skin) and has a lovely coconut fragrance and velvety texture.
Gradual tanning is also an option. If you are new to tanning and a bit hesitant or you like to work up to the shade you like, a gradual tanner such as PureTAN’s Gradual Tan might be perfect for you or Model Co’s Natural Tanning lotion. Use after exfoliating and build up to the colour that you want.
Don’t be afraid of self tanning. To reach pesky places, the good people at St Tropez have created the ‘back spatula’ to ensure you can apply fake tan evenly to those hard to reach places.
Post-application, it is impotant to let your tan dry. It is best to apply your tan just before you go to bed, to ensure you allow it enough time to absorb properly (it is reccomended you leave it for eight hours before showering or any exercise). If you must apply during the day, do not put on clothing until your skin is touch dry (around 10-15 minutes) and make sure it is dark to avoid any fake tan stains. If applying before bed, wear loose pyjamas.
Don’t forget to moisturise after your tan has developed. Ensure your skin is regularly and deeply moisturised with a body lotion or you can try the Pure Moisture Coconut Oil from PureTAN which is a deeply nourishing and hydrating formula.
Follow these tips and you’ll no doubt have the perfect flawless tan.
