John Fluevog’s upcoming capsule collection is a decidedly retro rock and roll influenced collection is inspired by the art, life and music of the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Drawing from his lyrics, legacy and distinct fashion sense, John and the Design Team worked closely with Jimi’s family to pay tribute to the late music icon. The Tudor Jimi is a square-toed ankle boot with braided appliqué while The Stand Up Electric Lady is a tall platform boot with silk scarf lacing. Both styles will be coming in gold embroidery and custom burnout velvet colourways. Jimi’s own handwriting is immortalized into the burnout velvet used within the collection. We caught up with John to find a bit more about the collection.
Tell us how this amazing collaboration came about
You could say it came out of the haze (of a certain colour), but the truth is, it came out of love and friendliness and mutual appreciation. Jimi’s sister, Janie, has been a Fluevog fan for years and reached out to Stephen here at Fluevog and it just grew from there. We were of course thrilled and in my opinion this collection is some of our best work ever.
What was it like working with Jimi’s family?
Janie has been such a delight to work with – I don’t know what else to say! We get to talk music and influence and style and Jimi and Fluevog…. It’s a treat!
How did you work through the design process and what parts of Jimi Hendrix’s life or career did you draw on for the collection?
As a group we went through mountains of images of Jimi and really submerged ourselves in the music and the visuals. From there, myself and Arabella and the design team created a collection that we can only hope would have been blessed by Jimi.
Why do you think Jimi Hendrix’s style is still relevant today?
Well, some people push passed trends and periods and create a style that is all their own. When that happens, I think it’s hard to contain it to a certain era – so I don’t know that we’ll see a period when people won’t respect his approach to fashion and style.
What do you want Fluevogers to feel wearing the Jimi Hendrix and Fluevog Experience?
I want them to feel Jimi, man! There is so much Jimi in this collection and so many references for the Jimi fan that I would be surprised if there isn’t a bounce in the step of every wearer. I get a bounce, just thinking about it!
