There’s a new name in Hawthorn East and it’s definitely one to remember. East End Wine Bar is the area’s newest establishment that brings together wine and good food in an elegant yet informal space. Co-owned by Demon’s ruckman Max Gawn, Saint James owners Rich Donovan & Craig Tate and Burnley Brewing operator Phil Gjisbergs East End Wine Bar is housed in an iconic, century-old, 1930’s auction house that has been transformed into a modern space but retains the heritage feel.
Donovan says, “One of the biggest draw cards to this project was the space we acquired, Youngs Auction House has been a staple in the area for over 80 years, so to be able to transform this heritage building into an elegant wine bar was a no brainer.”
The interior reflects an english pub but with a modern Melbourne feel through their bright, beautiful timbers and steel furnishes. The venue has a capacity of 130 people across the intimate indoor space & outdoor courtyard that is bright with a retractable awning. East End also includes a bottle shop stocking a balanced selection of low yielding wine producers alongside some of the old world’s masters.
East End boasts an impressive drink offering with a huge selection of wines wines from all over the world. Focusing on producers who maintain the integrity of their vineyards whilst concerning themselves in quality. The menu has been designed to share over a glass of wine with approachable food suited for wine pairing such as charcuterie boards, a selection of pizzas, preserved meats and other small dishes. With the Rivoli cinema across the road, they’re the perfect pre-movie snacks.
