After the decadence that is the festive season, it’s time to get fit! Tennis pro and long term Nike collaborator Maria Sharapova is making getting back into workout mode easier with her new workout, 2014 New Years Crush released exclusively through the Nike Training Club app. To celebrate the release, Maria and one of Nike’s master trainers, opened the Melbourne Central Rooftop Tennis Clubhouse on top of Melbourne Central to lead the group in a workout, with a special display of the latest training collection, and a dj playing a carefully curated gym playlist to get everybody in the mood to work out.
Before we hit the court to try the crush workout, Maria took some time to speak with us about the app, her training dos and don’ts, and fashion on and off the court. When describing her fitness routine, she stressed the importance of cardio and agility, laughing that she “doesn’t like heavy weights!”. Maria’s workout is a great mix of strength training, resistance, and cardio derived from the workouts she and her trainer do to keep her competition ready.
Earlier in the day, Maria also revealed her Australian Open tournament outfit, the Nike Premier Maria Tunic Dress and NikeiD version of the iconic Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour shoe. “My dress this year is more of a tunic, shorter than what I usually wear. I have chosen a pattern for the shorts underneath which gives it a nice extra pop of colour. We’ve chosen this style so it can be layered depending on the weather.” Maria said of her new style. A surprising revelation that came from the forum was that Maria often knows at least a year and a half in advance what she’ll be wearing on the court.
Of her on court fashion, Maria said that “I usually tend to wear greys and darks…tonal pieces, and if I want a pop of colour, [it’s] usually in my shoes. I keep things minimal but have one loud piece”. Keeping things classic and minimal also spills into her personal style, but she made mention of her love of finding “international designer [pieces] you can’t find anywhere else. It’s nice to browse boutiques you don’t know”.
When it came time to try the workout for ourselves, Maria joined in the fun, moving through each circuit with the group, and offering words of encouragement to keep moral high. By breaking the workout into quick repetitions, it can keep anyone focused and needs little equipment, so you can virtually do it anywhere. You don’t need a trainer, you’ve got one in your pocket!
After the workout, we were treated to a ‘protein pack’, full of delicious treats to replenish ourselves and to follow through our fitness overhaul, and get us all back on the path of healthy living after overindulging during the festive season.
