A clean, white, three-dimensional sculpture hung from the rafters, as if suspended in mid-air, setting a mood of whimsy and childlike delight as we took our seats for this morning’s Alice McCall showcase. McCall’s 10th anniversary collection celebrated the joy and dreamlike aesthetic the designer is renowned for, combining crisp whites with a sweet pastel palette. Taking inspiration from the surreal and the infinite possibility of the lucid dreaming, McCall’s ‘In My Dreams We Were Flying’ is the bridge between fantasy and reality.
Styled with shimmering hair and youthful, dewy complexions, cutouts danced across white maxi dresses and sweet playsuits. Lace detailing clung to the bodice of a fitted mini dress, and pleated shorts were worked back with a mesh tank for an effortlessly cool head-to-toe look.
We graduated from alabaster to soft pistachio green in the form of lightweight, crystal-pleated playsuits. Ruffles hung from the shoulders, suspended by spaghetti straps, and fluidity and freedom of movement reigned supreme. Technique and craftsmanship is, as always, a focus for McCall.
A carnation pink scalloped mini makes way for powder blues and lemon yellows. Intricate detailing and drapery define McCall’s eye for detail and craftsmanship, yet they hang from the body with a certain nonchalance and delicacy. Prints come to the forefront with pyramids, serpents and goddesses sprawled coming to life across digitally-printed bomber jackets, sweaters, paper bag trousers and envelope clutches.
An awe inspiring finale, set to Rainbow Connection, showcases each element of this strong and intricately detailed collection- a fitting celebration of Alice McCall’s 10 years in the business.
