Brighton hasn’t typically been recognised as a food and wine hotspot however Mr & Mrs P bucks the trend with its new Bay Street establishment, serving a wide variety of delicious morsels from head chef Matthew Butcher.
Upon first glance, Mr & Mrs P struck me as the perfect date venue – the sort of place you’d go for a quiet cocktail and snack, followed by a movie at Palace. It wasn’t until I was midway through my Kingfish with Truffle Soy dish that I realised this was the sort of venue you could settle in and make a night of. Who needs the movies when you’ve got Wagyu Beef accompanied by Buttered Risoni and Green Goddess Dressing on the menu? The food is designed to be shared, which is fantastic as it gives you the opportunity to try more than a few of the unique dishes. The cuisine is modern Australian and combines a flavours from a mix of countries such as Italian and Japanese, which is a clever reflection of the melting pot of different cultures in our country.
The setup is clever as the space has been really maximised without leaving you feeling cramped. The open bar downstairs makes it a great spot to catch up with a friend, or even a group. The upstairs space is intimate enough for a date, but open enough if you want to enjoy a girls night out. Live music, a menu to satisfy even the fussiest of diners and the sort of atmosphere that is noisy and vibrant without being too loud or distracting.
The drinks list is comprehensive which is sure to please cocktail buffs! I’d recommend starting with a Bloody Mary with the lot (they cleverly give you the option to customise your own) –it kicks like an old mule and will be sure to get your night started!
So next time you’re south of the river and want something that is a step-up from a pub but not as formal or fussy as a restaurant, stroll into Mr & Mrs P, order yourself a Bloody Mary with the lot and sit back and let the friendly staff look after you.
