In 2015, MECCA combined their love for art with their commitment to supporting emerging talent in a unique collaboration with young Australian artist, Clare Ellison Jakes to produce bespoke artwork that featured on Mecca Cosmetica’s Holiday campaign.
This year, through an ongoing partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, MECCA is proud to be collaborating with a contemporary Australian artist, Pip & Pop (the pseudonym used by multidisciplinary Perth-based artist Tanya Schultz), to celebrate the Holiday season across all MECCA concepts: Mecca Cosmetica, Mecca Maxima, MECCA and mecca.com.au. Pip & Pop has previously collaborated with the likes of Hermès and Romance Was Born and has exhibited her work throughout Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, Netherlands and the UK.
“We are so looking forward to unveiling this collaboration with Pip & Pop,” says MECCA Founder Jo Horgan. “Tanya’s work is such a joyous celebration of colour and so very fitting to help us mark the festive season in a truly artful way.” Schultz was inspired by the ancient Japanese tradition of gifting Temari Balls to children, where parents and grandparents would create beautiful, hand embroidered balls using threads of old kimonos. These brilliantly coloured balls would often contain hand-written New Year well-wishes for their children. Pip & Pop’s take on the tradition of the Temari ball employs washi tape to create truly unique patterns which are then digitally altered to bring them to life across multiple platforms.
Schultz’s brightly coloured, kaleidoscopic artwork will feature throughout the packaging of the 2016 MECCA limited-edition Holiday Collection, available in stores and online now.
