The key to great style is being able to make a trend your own, working back your favourite pieces with items you already own, love and feel your best in. For Spring Summer 16/17, we’re seeing earth tones, military-inspired hues and silhouettes and subtle yet intricate details trickling over our favourite pieces, filling Northland Shopping Centre to the brim with beautiful, yet accessible pieces. Choose your favourite look and let us show you how to make it work for you.
THE NEW SUIT
A classic black suit is a timeless staple, but make the look your own by creating a “custom suit”. Don’t feel that you have to buy a coordinating blazer and trousers from the same store- if you’re drawn to a pair of pants in one shop, and a great jacket in another, put them together to create the perfect suit for your style. The military trend is big this spring, so for this look we teamed a blazer with oversized button detailing from Forever New with a pair of tailored trousers from Country Road, showing how easy it is to pay subtle homage to a trend while keeping your look timeless. Both of these pieces are created using a ponte fabric, ensuring they can be washed and worn with ease.
COORDINATES
Coordinates have been a style staple for a few seasons now, and this bomber and skirt combo by Veronika Maine, available at Myer, effortlessly fuses three of our favourite new season trends- military, earth tones and the bomber. The olive hue of this look is on-trend but could still be classified a neutral, making it surprisingly easy to pare back with existing pieces in your wardrobe. While a lot of women (and men!) are afraid to embrace the bomber jacket trend for fear of it adding bulk to their shape, this update on the classic bomber cut is a winner on all body types. By switching out a heavy fabric for a light one, and a thick elastic waistband for a fine, loose one, this piece won’t create a dreaded “marshmallow” silhouette and skims effortlessly over the upper body.
THE EMBROIDERED BOMBER
A more traditional bomber jacket silhouette, this style from Forever New fuses a traditionally sporty cut with intricate, delicate embroidery. Oriental inspired embroidery is crawling over athleisure styles, allowing you to elevate your look while remaining at the height of comfort. Team with drop crotch pants, minimal accessories and a mid-heel for a runway ready look.
THE SHIRT DRESS
Less of a trend and more of a staple, the shirt dress is the kind of piece you can simply throw on and go. This style from Country Road features a removable belt, meaning you can use it to subtly cinch in your waist or remove it for an oversized, elegantly draped look. Taking shape in a light silk means you don’t have to conform to the added bulk of a crisp cotton shirt dress, while the midi length hemline is easier to translate from day to night than a mini or a maxi. Pair with white sneakers for an everyday look or dial it up with a simple heel for the evening.
EARTH TONES
Sunburnt oranges, blush pinks and soft olive tones mingle this season to create an overall earthier look than that of seasons past. While the bold copper hue of this Veronika Maine dress is undoubtedly eye catching, it’s surprisingly easy to work back into your existing wardrobe thanks to its classic, somewhat minimalistic silhouette. This falls in line with our overall ethos for SS16- if you see a colour that you love, but you’re afraid to embrace the trend, look for a piece with minimal embellishments in a simple cut and you’ll find it easy to work in with existing wardrobe staples, like a black blazer and classic heel.
THE SLIP DRESS
Much like the bomber jacket, the slip dress is a Spring trend that many of us are timid to embrace. To make the trend work for you, look for a slip dress with a longer hemline and in a matte fabric (steer clear of silks or anything high-sheen) to avoid an underwear-as-outerwear situation. While we’ve kept the styling of this Forever New slip dress to a minimum, picture it with a longline blazer in your favourite hue, or even layered over a round-neck top for additional coverage.
BEAUTY NOTES
Much like SS16 fashion, this season’s biggest makeup trend is letting your natural beauty shine through- embracing new season makeup looks, but making them unique to you. Global Makeup Artist for Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics, Siobhan Kelly, tells us that Spring and Summer beauty is “all about fresh skin, placing foundation only where you need it.” Napoleon Perdis’ Personal Trainer Serum Foundation fuses skincare with makeup to give the skin a natural glow, evening out the skin tone without disguising it. Bold brows continue to reign supreme, with Siobhan suggesting beauty lovers enhance the natural curvature of their brows instead of trying to alter them altogether. NP’s Wand-Er Brow Clear to Go brushes on clear to tame unruly brows, rather than covering them up.
