The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) this morning made the announcement for the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2016 collection. The upcoming exhibition entitled ‘Degas: A New Vision’ will feature over two hundred works from world renowned artist Edgar Degas. The selected pieces will display Degas’ work across the multiple mediums he mastered throughout his career, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography.

Opening in June of 2016, Melbourne will be the first city to host this impressive curation of Degas’ work. The artworks to be displayed have been sourced from over forty institutions and private lenders, across thirteen different countries.

Degas’ work will be presented thematically, showcasing the subject matter he continually referenced throughout his career. These will include Degas’ famous ballet scenes, horse-racing, modern Parisian life, portraits, nudes and women at work and leisure. The NGV worked coincide with principal curator and Edgar Degas expert, Henri Loyrette. Loyrette who was formally director of the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France.

The announcement was held at the NGV and presented by Special Minister of State, The Hon. Gavin Jennings and NGV Director, Tony Ellwood.

Speaking on the upcoming exhibition, Ellwood said “Degas: A New Vision will provide audiences with a rare experience to truly be immersed in the creativity and originality of his art, giving visitors a deeper and richer understanding of his brilliance”.

Proceeding the announcement was a brief performance by Australian Ballet dancers, paying homage to Degas’ love of ballet.

The Winter Masterpieces 2016 exhibition, featuring Edgar Degas, is said to be the most complex exhibition since its inception in 2004. The Exhibition will run from the 24th of June to the 18th of September 2016, before arriving at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in October.
