Hip-Hop still reigns supreme this month with Drake on the reggae tip for Hotline Bling; producers Skrillex and Flux Pavilion feature Pusha T and Riff Raff, respectively, on Burial and Who Wants To Rock; Aussie Tkay Maidza, fresh off Mark Ronson support duties on his recent tour, holds her own on M.O.B and I can’t believe I slept on The Weeknd’s The Hills! This is definitely going to be The Weeknd’s year.
There’s also been some great pop music on the indie/dance tip with Duke Dumont releasing yet another killer single in Ocean Drive, SITG standouts Years and Years on Shine, rapper Fetty Wap from left field on a remix of The Knocks’ Classic and songstress Banks bringing new life to Chet Faker’s 1998. Ways To Go by Grouplove is another one I slept on… I only heard it for the first time in a movie trailer the other day!
Mark Ronson’s show last week was absolutely incredible; the highlight being a sold-out crowd singling along to the late Amy Winehouse’s Valerie. Ronson has a strong connection to Melbourne, with the POW in St Kilda being one of his first gigs in 2004 with local singer Daniel Merriweather, who also performed at the Margaret Court Arena show. This month, I’m looking forward to checking out Passion Pit at the Forum and the David Bowie exhibit at ACMI.
