An event shrouded in mystery, Melbourne’s well-heeled gathered at Westfield Doncaster last week for an exclusive showing of Dion Lee’s Winter 2015 collection ahead of the designer’s tenancy in the centre’s Inhabit space. The bloggers, stylists and fashion worshippers alike were lead beneath the suburban shopping complex into a concrete lined basement, transformed into an underground runway space reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s factory.
Lee himself joined fashionable revellers, indulging in an intimate cocktail party before talking the crowd through his collection during a surprise runway show. While classic Melbourne black played a prominent role, welcome pops of colour came courtesy of rich jewel tones- think deep navys and emerald greens. The palette was muted enough to be considered neutral, wearable enough to work into ones existing wardrobe with ease, however it was opulent enough to be considered an injection of colour.
A dark green mohair cocoon coat served as an undisputed hero piece, adding winter sensibility to a collection of laser cut silks featuring the most intricate of cut outs. Hemlines fell below the knee while plunging necklines gave the classic silk shirt a sultry update. A favourite amongst front row stalwarts, a navy and green midi skirt epitomised what Lee’s winter collection is all about- ultra modern updates of wardrobe staples, each featuring a signature Dion Lee point of difference.
Westfield’s Inhabit space exists to open up Australian designers to a new clientele. Dion Lee will fill the exciting retail space until Tuesday September 1.
