Interpretive dancers, a thumping David Bowie-themed soundtrack, and Carlton footballers – the GQ Australia Menswear runway at VAMFF had it all. The brainchild of creative director and stylist, David Bonney, looks from designers including M.J. BaleArthur Galan AGFrom BrittenBassike, and Calibre were presented a little less stiff, and a lot more rock and roll, making it one of the most exciting presentations of the week.

M.J. Bale‘s man is polished, poised, and a little Mod. Think sleek three piece suits in neutrals and navy with a pop of colour by way of accessories. Double breasted blazers and peacoats lead the cut of jackets, and a hint of pinstripe added a little classic styling.

Before Arthur Galan AG‘s models could hit the runway, a few surprise guests from the Carlton Football Club took over, showing us their best blue steel. As for the looks, classic slim fit suits were the look du jour.

From Britten always offer a little quirk, and with monochrome linework, layers on layers, they did not disappoint. Culotte-esque silhouettes and bomber jackets are staples of their AW15, and while may not be for everyone, certainly made the edgy label stand out.

Bassike showed a new take on mens normcore styling. Neutral colour palates and soft, relaxed hoodies and track pants lead the styles, with long line shorts and oversized sweaters as the silhouette.

Calibre‘s presentation showed sleek mod suiting, and then turned up the volume with Brendan Maclean hitting the runway to perform a riotous version of Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ to close the show.

And the final touch? Once the runway had finished, the familiar strains of ‘Fashion’ filled the room as the crowd descended into the afterparty.
