Looking at Josie Maran, it’s easy to say I’ll have what she’s having. Model, mother, entrepreneur, Josie seemingly takes on her many titles not only with ease, but with glowing skin while she’s at it. While we can’t possess the genetics which made Josie one of the most sought after models in the 90’s, Josie has not only let us in on the secret to her flawless complexion, she has bottled it, and the great news is, it’s coming to Australia.
We spoke to Josie to get the lowdown on what we can expect from her amazing cosmetics range, and got her to share a few of her skincare secrets with us.
After travelling the world as a model and realising there was a gap in the market for high performing products, which make a positive impact on both people and our planet, you created your skincare and makeup line. Can you tell us about how this project came about and the process you undertook to make your dream a reality?
When I was traveling the world on modelling shoots, I was always asking my makeup artists what was in the stuff they were putting on my face, and the answers always horrified me. I asked if they could substitute healthy, natural cosmetics and they said no such thing existed that performed at the same level. I was determined to find a way! When I started the company, I was doing nearly everything by myself. I learned a lot very quickly! Our cosmetics have always been about simplifying and purifying what you have in your makeup bag or medicine cabinet. But as I’ve grown my team, we’ve started to pioneer major advancement in cosmetics technology. My Pure Argan Milk Intensive Hydrating Treatment is a great example of this. It’s a blend of microdroplets of Argan Oil suspended in water without the use of harsh chemical emsulfiers. I had no idea 7 years ago that we’d be innovating in the oil category so dramatically.
Your company’s ethos is centered around ‘luxury with a conscience.’ Can you tell us more about this concept?
Our philosophy is Luxury with a Conscience, which means we strive to make the best, most effective products while also treating people and the planet with the utmost care.
The hero ingredient of your products is argan oil. Can you tell us about what makes this so product so special?
My 100% Pure Argan Oil is just one ingredient, so your skin knows just what to do with it. Argan Oil is the world’s most abundant source of essential fatty acids. It nourishes and hydrates and actually helps balance sebum production, so it won’t break you out.

I’m always in love with my 100% Pure Argan Oil. It’s the cornerstone of my brand, and my ultimate head-to-toe solution. But right now, I’m also obsessed with my Argan Black Oil Mascara. It’s 91% natural, which is pretty unprecedented for mascara, and it lifts, lengthens and curls like no other.
What’s your daily skincare and makeup routine?
I like to think I’m pretty low maintenance! I wash my face only at night with my Argan Cleansing Oil or Argan Cleansing Treatment. In the mornings, I just apply my Pure Argan Milk Intensive Hydrating Treatment and then my 100% Pure Argan Oil. If I have time before getting out the door, I apply a bit of my Argan Tinted Moisturiser, my Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee, and a few swipes of my Argan Black Oil Mascara. I am also so addicted to my Shu Uemura eyelash curler. I love the feeling and the look—I need it!
You would have picked up a lot of beauty tips during your modelling days. Any you can share with us?
I think the most important thing I learned is to hydrate your skin before putting on makeup. Without properly hydrated skin, your makeup is just never going to look as good and as glowing as you want it to.
Mother, wife, entrepreneur, is there anything you can’t do?! What’s the secret to having it all?
I think women put a lot of pressure on themselves to live up to this ideal of “having it all.” The fact is it’s all a balance. There are times where I wish I was spending more time with my daughters, and when I feel like I’m not giving enough energy to my company. But I have a great support system. My mom lives down the street from us in Los Angeles, and I have a fabulous team of vibrant, smart people who work for me at JMC. It truly takes a village to raise children, and to raise a brand.
What exciting things do you have coming up for Josie Maran Cosmetics?
I can’t reveal too much, but I’m always dreaming up new things we can do with Argan Oil. I want to make the most of this magical ingredient.
