This year’s graduates of the Sydney Institute of Fashion Design Studio selected for The Innovators runway show at MBFWA, each presented a 12 piece collection to showcase the culmination of their years of study. One of the most anticipated shows, the designers featured aren’t restrained by commerciality which means they can be a bit more adventurous with their creations.

KAYLENE MILNER

Milner’s label STURM & DRANG was born out of a desire to create garments that are feminine without being girly and strong without being masculine. The collection focuses on reviving traditional arts and crafts through fashionable applications, collaborating with artisans to keep their trade alive.

CHRISTOPHER BALDWIN

Heavily influence by all things sci-fi and psychedelic, Baldwin’s collection was inspired by reptilian like sins and furs with Baldwin recreating these naturally occurring textures with unnatural materials such as cellophane and cable ties.

CARLIE WATERMAN

An eclectic mix of textures and textiles inspired by the natural landscape. The traditional crafts of hand weaving, smocking, knitting, embroidery and fabric manipulation have been employed using leather, wool, silk, raffia, and plastic. The standout accessory was a headpiece covered in tiny armymen which looked like coral.

CYNTHIA THAI

Inspired by the famous painting Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, Thai’s collection combined beautiful weaves and knits with light crystal embellishments.

STEPHANIE GOERLACH

Goerlach collection ‘Tibbity’ was influenced by her favourite fairytale ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Constructed using mostly natural fabrics – silks, silk and cotton blends as well as leather, wools, alpaca and cashmere yarns, Goerlach used the techniques she learnt to create a diverse collection with a quirky twist.
