A Victoria’s Secret Supermodel walking for Australia’s premiere couturier makes for the perfect fashion pairing.
Guests at Alex Perry’s SS14/15 runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) were treated to the spectacle that is Alessandra Ambrosio. Stomping the runway in true supermodel fashion, Alessandra wore Alex’s pieces with a stylish ferocity that left us in awe.
Opening with a midriff baring, heavily embellished two-piece, Alex’s signature beading has worked its way from red-carpet ready gowns to a series of more versatile separates. In a palette consisting predominantly of black, white and a smokey steel blue, Alex Perry SS15 is a unique fusion of couture and high-end street wear. Teamed with gently tousled locks, dewy skin and the highest of leather lace-up booties, each head-to-toe look was fit for an it-girl. Alex has taken a slightly grungier approach to couture; an approach that is sure to resonate with a new generation of Alex Perry lovers.
Necklines were either high and collarbone baring, or strapless and ever-so-slightly sports luxe. Intricate leather detailing formed almost reptilian scales on A-line skirts, working their way gingerly into jet black sequins. Separates are key, with each piece able to work seamlessly with the next.
We saw splashes of tangerine as we worked through from minis to midis. Gowns clung to the body in blacks and crisp whites, oozing both sensuality and sophistication. A modern take on a style of years past, the 90s slip dress gets an elegant update in creamy embellished silk. A one-sleeved black floor length gown seemed to speak of a new direction for Alex Perry- stripping all the elements back to accentuate his innate knowledge of the female form spelled something of a style evolution for the designer.
Understated chic made way for a final story that revelled in excess- heavy and intricate beading, daring sweetheart bust lines and highly structured skirting were key, three elements that somehow worked together in pure harmony. Flared minis were highly structured, sitting away from the body in an architectural fashion. A closing hero piece, worn again by Alessandra, combined all of the elements we’ve come to love and expect from Perry (embellishment and undeniable femininity) with a fresher, slightly grungier attitude. An early highlight, Alex Perry’s SS14/15 collection marked a bold new direction for Australia’s premiere couturier.
