A careful curation of 7 of Australia’s most recognised fashion houses, presented by Australia’s premier fashion magazine? Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) Premium Runway 6 was simply destined to be a success.
The fashion spectacular, presented by Harper’s Bazaar, showcased the finest in high-end design, with intricacy and lasting luxury at the heart of each collection. Styling was high fashion and high impact. Gold leaf shimmered on the eyelids of each model- a texture reflecting the glamour and luxury of each ensemble. Hair was pulled back into textured low buns keeping each look modern and edgy.
An opening collection by Ellery saw a predominantly black palette provide a strong contrast for bright art deco and cubism inspired prints and light sunray pleating. Combining the modern with the ornate, we saw the trumpet sleeves, weighty jacquards and fluted hems that have become something of a signature for the label.
Alex Perry’s winter offering sees the couturier add streamlined suits into the mix with his signature red-carpet-ready gowns. Perry’s cuts are slightly more provocative than they have been in the past, adding an element of sex appeal to an undoubtedly sophisticated collection. While lace gowns in lemon and powder blue are high glamour, a figure hugging black dress with a plunging neckline and spaghetti straps is our pick of the collection.
Arthur Galan AG’s autumn winter line is almost exclusively monochromatic, moving through to a few jewel toned splashes of emerald and turquoise. Leather pants and bodices are cut firm to the body, designed to be worn beneath highly structured boxy jackets and draped sleeveless vests. Sleek and modern, the AW14 Arthur Galan woman is sexy, sophisticated and assertive.
In a palette of black, blush and bright aqua, Yeojin Bae’s winter collection is infused with edgy elegance and razor sharp tailoring. The silhouette this season is streamlined and architectural, featuring plunging mesh panels and highly structure shoulder detailing. Fire engine red power suiting makes an appearance, empowering us to brighten up our winter threads.
Lui Hon’s winter collection is dramatic and intriguing. Shapes are voluminous- a combination of full skirts, exaggerated draping and cinched in waists curtesy of leather peplum detailing. Styling is avante-garde and mysterious, each garment flawlessly intermingling with the next.
A name synonymous with beauty, Carla Zampatti’s winter collection is arguably one of her best yet. Feminine and strong, each luxe piece has an element of toughness and sensibility. Leatherette snakeskin pieces ooze sensuality, while a black silk evening gown teams draped silk with fitted embellished sleeves.
Cult designer duo Sass & Bide take a step away from previous season’s neon pops and embellishment against a monochrome backdrop, this time working with directional prints and a gold, navy and cream colour palette. An avian themed print dominates, while a clear aztec inspiration makes itself known through a mustard mini dress and printed short and blazer combo.
