To sum up VAMFF’s runway 5 in one word? Bold. Some of Australia’s favourite labels, namely FINDERS KEEPERS, Cameo, Jaggar, Talulah, Rodeo Show, and Wild Horses, came together to show the eager crowd how they imagine fashion for A/W 2014. Digital prints, sharp tailoring, and exaggerated proportions were the trends du jour, and the colour palates bold and bright.
Talulah‘s mixing of digital prints with classic shapes made for a strong collection that read very influenced by the style style darling. Florals are reinvented as icy, graphic prints and are mixed with geometrics, houndstooth and stripes, and silhouettes are classic, shapely, and classic. It’s not just the fabrication that takes an interesting turn; knits are worn over delicate chiffon dresses which can easily walk straight from the runway into the streets.
JAGGAR served rockstar chic, embodying the 90s It Girl, with plenty of leather, animal print, and a heavy dose of attitude. Giraffe print, stripes, and all leather everything were the stand out trends, and innovative shapes refreshed the classic grey knit. Of note, every look was perfectly matched with cult favourite, Lack of Colour hats.
Cameo walked some show-stopping looks down the runway, with exaggerated bows, playful use of faux fur, disco luxe, and their signature floral prints. My favourite looks included the apricot short suit with tied bandeau (above), a green floral relaxed suit, and a white fur topped shift dress that 90s fashion icon Cher Horowitz would have killed for.
If anyone understands 90s grunge glam, it’s FINDERS KEEPERS. Showing that they’ve got the cool girl’s uniform down, the collection included long line bustiers, their signature playsuits, and graphic jerseys – all accented with their trademark, in-house designed digital prints. Highlights of the collection? Asymmetric jersey skirts, Givenchy-esque sweatshirts, and tailored to perfection blazers.
Taking a similar route was Wild Horses, mixing sports luxe with unconventional fabrications. Disco fabulous lamé and buttery soft leather made up the foundations of the looks, with a abstract peacock print injecting some colour into the collections. The pieces looked amazing on their own, but they could be layered with each other to create a fresh take on winter (and shield us from the Melbourne winter!)
Rodeo Show again lived up to their mission statement, showing a collection that captured the eye, but exuded a very wearable appeal. Crisp separates with striking prints was their aesthetic, and their use of bright, bold coloured lace like the fabulous cobalt ‘Miley’ cocktail dress.
Keepsake again proved why they’re the leader in feminine minimalism, showing a collection that is contemporary, and fresh – bold lines and interesting silhouettes – but still true to their feminine aesthetic. Origami skirts and bonded necklines added an edge to a classical evening wear look, and exaggerated flounces and peplums update last season’s favourite trends.
