It’s a big week of Spring racing starting this Saturday with the AAMI Victoria Derby Day. To make sure that you have everything covered on the Beauty front, Couturing has some last minute Beauty tips for you before you make your way to the track.
Hair
Hair maestro, Kevin Murphy, says that this racing season the look takes a cue from the 30’s and 40’s – low buns, faux bobs and short bangs – elegant day time dressing. He says that “everything will have an old world charm or post-war look to it but you want to keep the silhouette small. Big hair is “not in” and you want to try to keep your hair off your shoulders”. With that in mind, Murphy says that “A style closer to the head will work better for this season, and something up will stay fresher than if you wear your hair out.”
He says that that is out can get flat and the wind can make it look like you’ve pulled a bush through backwards, and adds that if you want to wear your hair out, make sure you bring a brush and some dry shampoo to maintain your look throughout the day.
If you’re wearing a hat, Kevin suggests keeping the hair close to the top of your head and go for a sleeker top just in case you want to take your hat off, as there is no real cure for hat hair. A simpler hair style will look better and last the day looking fresh.
Preparing for race day will also mean that you need to pay attention to your hair in the days leading up to the event. Alissia Hitchcock from Odyssey Hair recommends that you use a weekly treatment such as Moroccan Oil Weightless Hydrating Mask or KMS Free Shape Deep Conditioner to prepare your hair.
She suggests that if your wearing your hair up on race day have clean, dry hair and avoid using any heavy conditioners or product that will weigh down your hair as you don’t want it to be too soft to work with.
Skincare
The number one tip for everyone heading to the races is to make sure that you wear sunscreen. With many race goers spending time outside, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, protect your skin from premature ageing and sun spots by using a good sunscreen. There are many quality moisturisers on the market that have a good SPF like L’Oreal Paris’ Youth Code Day lotion moisturiser that has SPF 15+ or Olay Complete Defence SPF 30+ Daily Lotion, or foundations like Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation that has SPF 15+.
Body care
If you want to get noticed for the right reasons at the races then make sure you don’t remind people of an oompah loompah. Getting your tan right can be done professionally with a spray tan, or by choosing the right tanning product for you.
Obviously the key rules of tanning need to be adhered to if you’re self tanning (making sure you’re fully exfoliated and apply carefully to difficult areas such as the elbow or knee). But the other rule is to pick one that will make sure you don’t look orange!
Organic self tanners are more widely available in the market and a new self tan that is the first truly professional strength product available to the public by the brand Loving Tan is here to help your tanning needs. The unique formula provides you with an immediate colour, while developing into a deeper darker tan, giving a natural, sexy tan within minutes. The colour guide technology ensures an easy, streak free application every time. With different shades to suit all skin tones, there is a perfect product for every skin tone and because of the instant colour, it ensures the clear active ingredients have been applied evenly over the body. Loving Tan is naturally derived with no parabens or alcohol, and contains certified organic DHA and Erythrulose to avoid ugly orange tones, ensuring a natural tan. With a special applicator mitt and easy to reach back applicator, there is no excuse not to be able to do a professional tan within the comfort of your own home!
