The 2013 Lavazza Italian film festival kicked off last night, with festival ambassador, Supermodel Nicole Trunfio, officially opening proceedings at the Opening Gala Evening at Palace Cinemas, Como. Featuring 27 handpicked films, Palace Cinema CEO, Ben Zeccola, said that the array of films showing at the Festival “showcased the very best of Italian cinema”.

True to his word, the film that opened the Festival, La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) directed by Paolo Sorrentino, is a stunning film exploring Italy’s decay through the eyes of an aging writer, one who laments about lost youth and lost love in the city of Rome. The film is Italy’s entry for Best Foreign language film at the 2014 Academy awards next year and was nominated for the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Post the film’s showing, guests were treated to a very special opening party with Festival sponsors, Brown Brothers and Peroni providing a selection of their best drinks, and one of Melbourne’s favourite Italian eateries, DOC, providing a wonderful Italian lunchbox filled with amazing culinary delights such as Buffala Mozarella, Parma ham and black rice salad.
