Winter is dealing its last chills and the road trip season is getting nearer. Usually this would mean ice-cream sundays and Four’N’Twenty pie wrappers lodged under your seat but it doesn’t have to be that way. Better weather can mean better food if you know where to find it so we’re giving you some pointers on where the good eats are hidden along Melbourne’s favourite road trip destination, The Great Ocean Road.
A LA GRECQUE
60, Great Ocean Rd
Aireys Inlet
Owned by successful restauranteur Kosta Talimanidis, who is the ever present host, this Greek inspired restaurant is one of the best hotspots the road has to offer. Breakfast will see you tossing up choices of field mushrooms with thyme and feta, sourdough with bacon, avocado and lemon, and poached pear with Meredith sheep’s milk yoghurt. If you do manage to choose, you’ll be presented with a Grecian feast of Herculean proportions.
RIVER TEA HOUSE
4B, Mountjoy Parade
Lorne
Quickly marking itself as Lorne’s go-to, this cafe on the side of Erskine River boasts a cornucopia of blends for the tea enthusiast but also offers a damn fine coffee. Breakfast sticks to toast and muesli whereas lunch boasts all the favourites.
BAY LEAF CAFE
131, Great Ocean Road
Apollo Bay
Even though it doesn’t have a lot of competition in the area, Bay Leaf acts as though it’s on Chapel street and is inventive with several menu items. Always crowded on a sunny day, it offers a selection of local artists’ works and a thoughtful wine list.
WAVES PORT CAMPBELL
29, Lorde street
Port Campbell
Being a boutique style of cafe-restaurant-bar, Waves offers the likes of florentines and benedicts but also offers a health food range brimming with gluten free options and vegan items. For the devil may care diner, the pick is the chargrilled eye fillet with red onion jam coupled with an asian style oyster lade steak.
CAFE LAVA
235, Lava St
Warrnambool
When you’ve ventured as far as Warrnambool your in it for the small town experience. This cafe is a chic converted stable that does a big breakfast like only the country can in an atmosphere on the fairer side of fair dinkum. What a beaut!
