My fashion philosophy is that a few high-quality investment pieces should form the core of your wardrobe, with cheaper “trendy” items styled around this. I’m a true believer in cost-per-wear, and I believe that everyone can benefit from well-made, timeless staples that can be worn for a long time. As a perpetually broke university student, my wardrobe is proof that by shopping smart, you don’t necessarily need a lot of dosh to look good.

Without a doubt, my favourite trend this season is monochrome. As a true Melbournian, most of my investment pieces are black, and always versatile. Subsequently, monochrome is easy for me to pull off this season, mixing these staples with a couple of statement items to keep it on-trend.

Classic loafers (Tod’s). For when I feel like channeling grandma-chic, à la Alexa Chung.

The evening clutch (Zara). Add texture with the glitter, and perspex is a must-have this season.

Basic tee’s (SABA). The bold stripe is fresh and on-trend, while a white tee can never go wrong.

The statement jacket (Alysi). That’s right, patent leather sleeves.

The everyday bag (Mulberry). They say that patience is a virtue: set a small portion of money aside each week or stalk out your dream designer bag until it goes on sale. You’ll have it quicker than you expect.

Leather is always worth splurging on. A leather mini (Eska Alikai) and leather leggings (AG Arthur Galan) can be styled with everything.

And of course, there’s always Mum. Raid her wardrobe for an updated classic that you plan to never return.

As we are continually reminded, times are tough. But if you are wise about what you spend your money on, you can step out looking amazing, season after season. To pull off this year’s monochrome look, simply add cheaper new-season black-and-white prints to the timeless staples I have suggested above. Next season, rinse and repeat. Remember ladies: shop smart, wear forever.
