Melbourne is littered with both large and hole-in-the-wall coffee shops; a cup of caffeine available at every corner. However, the question that plagues city wanderers is how to filter out the bad from the good and where to start.
Dukes have built a reputation at their flagship Chapel St store for making seriously good coffee and their signature blend is stocked at some of the city’s top cafes. This new Flinders Lane shopfront is both accessible and foolproof. The answer to our jittery prayers.
The floor of the new CBD Dukes Coffee Roasters is laid with baby blue tiles each framed with a chocolate-coloured Art Nouveau pattern. Similar in name to its intricate flooring, the store’s pastries are provided by a bakery named Mosaic.
The Argentinian biscuits they stock are the size of a twenty-cent coin, rich with texture and the perfect accompaniment to a strong or creamy cuppa. It’s all about balance. Dark chocolate shells cover a thick caramel centre, not overly sweet or overpowering. The sweet snack’s white chocolate counterpart is filled with a traditional coconut based recipe.
Everything, including the store’s smooth recycled timber interior, is done with refined style and ease.
If good coffee, delicious treats and comfortable seats in snuggly corners aren’t enough to get you off the streets and into the store – well, they also have a fantastic magazine collection to flick through while you sip the best latte you’ve had all year.
