The Tomboy Heiress – SS13/14
Within all smiling faces and sparking eyes are quiet mournful moments we all remember.
One of the most packed out shows of MBFWA so far, Toni Maticevski had the crowd buzzing with excitement as they took their seats for his MBFWA show. The atmosphere was electric as haunting piano opened the show, transitioning into Yves Saint Laurent announcing his retirement, then Pierre Berger speaking at YSL’s funeral as models took to the runway.
The aesthetic of the show was minimalist luxe, which carried from the slick white runway to the stunning garments. Taking 50’s concepts and adding his magic touch, Maticevski’s collection was simply breathtaking. Neoprene was draped in a way that echoed ancient marble sculptures and beading was painstaking applied with technical perfection.
Combining elements of Japanese Geisha style, with an European flair, Maticevski’s garments came to life as they took to the runway. Intricate crocodile textures, bold stripes and Grecian inspired draping made an elegant statement. Garments featured exposed zip detail along the back, which has become one of Maticevski’s trademarks.
In a unique touch, models carried beautiful round flower bags made by Dr Cooper Studio, which provided a delicate contrast to the sleek clothes.
Bonded jerseys, tucks and pleats, twists and fold and subtle embellishments all added to the subtle impact of Maticevski’s clothes. Hemlines were refreshingly modest and silhouettes were elegant and modern.
Maticevski’s show was a lesson in how to make a maximum statement with a minimalist design.
Viva Maticevski.
