Makeup artists took a page out of Gothic romance classics like ‘Northanger Abbey’ on the London Fashion Week runways this year. ‘Dark, brooding, ethereal’, was the key look for several designers. And while the ghostly style may be hard to pull off at home, it sure made for fabulous viewing! Here are the top Gothic inspired beauty looks from the week.
‘70s horror movie ‘Carrie’ was the inspiration for hairstylists at Toni & Guy as they worked to create a Gothic look at Giles Deacon. Stylist Paul Hanlon aimed to create ‘that one girl at school who was a little bit creepy but also really endearing’. Hair was flat as a tack with Hanlon using Label M Leave in Conditioner and Relaxing Balm to keep the hair weighed down.
Creepy-cool girl Wednesday Addams from the Addams family was all the fashion at Erdem. Makeup artist, Hannah Murray, transformed models into ghostly ethereal beauties to complement the dark fashion collection. The models’ skin glowed naturally with tinted moisturiser, NARS Orgasm blush on the cheeks and a NARS highlighter in Luxor. Eye brows were strong with plenty of shading around the eyes.
Makeup was applied to show resemblance to zombies at John Rocha. Artist Sam Bryant kept skin pale and iridescent with the vision of “makeup coming out of the models”.
Over at Jean-Pierre Braganza, MAC Cosmetics artist Terry Barber worked to inject some Gothic glamour onto the runway. The makeup style reflected a ‘continuation of colour for winter’. Barber used metallic eye-shadow and pressed beetle wing shades on top of black across eyelids. She then lined the lower lash line with white eyeliner and heaped on the mascara.
The ghostly and eerie look was also centre-stage at Mary Katrantzou. Inspired by eerie landscapes, Val Garland directed the makeup style using MAC Mineralize Moisture Foundation for luminous skin. MAC Pro Eyegloss in Mother of Pearl was applied across the eyelid and up to the eyebrows. Models lips were painted in a pale shade of pink to continue to downplay the pale and unnatural makeup style.
The vision for Louise Gray was “beautiful, imperfect make-up” that looked like it had been worn all night. Models’ eye makeup was smudged along the lower lash line for a gothic panda-eye effect. Red lip liner extended the natural shape of lips, giving models a resemblance to the Joker.
London Fashion Week has definitely delivered on the performance factor inspiring plenty of interesting quirky beauty ideas!
