Since 1993, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival have hosted annual and year round events which cast the lime light on Victoria’s disposition towards all things culinary. In 2013, the festival has reached the cusp of adulthood in its twentieth year and instead of ‘getting tattoos and leaving the country to find itself’, it has only grown bigger and better.
With over two hundred events spanning Victoria and some lofting in the price range between $250 – $595, we decided to compile a range of the best freebies available. You can thank us later.
Urban Coffee Food and Brew Bar

See the growing processes of Coffee beans, in a world first installation that reinterprets a terraced coffee farm in an urban environment. Taste beans from across the globe made by some of the nation’s best baristas and try hand crafted coffees from Melbourne’s most popular cafes.
Land Is Life Exhibition
Saturday 2nd of March 11:00am – 3:00pm, The Wheeler Centre
Watch this photographic and multimedia presentation to enlighten yourself on the methods used by farmers challenged by land erosion and changing weather patterns. Come between 2-4pm and you’ll hear informative talks by Oxfam representatives from the front line.
A world of Flavour
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of March, 11:00am – 8:00 pm, Southgate ave, Southgate
Southgate will be hosting chef demonstrations, with riverside entertainment along the Yarra, and tasting plates from the area’s restaurants.
Yara’s Edge Picnic and Jazz
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of March 11:00am – 8:00pm, Lorrimer Stree, Yara’s Edge
Groove to some fine Jazz while scavenging the tent village along the Yarra for wine, beer and cider tastings.
Dandenong World Fare
Sunday 3rd of March 11:00am – 4:00pm, Cleeland Street, Dandenong
Focusing on diversity of flavour, the Dandenong World Fair will exhibit cultures from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe through food and dance in this hawker style market place.
Earthly Activation
Saturday 9th of March 12:00pm – 3:00pm, Section 8
Have a beer at Section 8 and listen up as key note speakers educate you on ‘Earthly Urban Activation’, otherwise known as making ecological use of the concrete jungle.
Flavours Human Library
Wednesday 13th of March 2:00pm – 4:oopm, Oakleigh Public Library
Just like hiring a book, this event aptly named ‘the human library’, allows us to briefly borrow a person. You can converse with them for 15 minutes and share recipe combinations while being guru’d on their eating culture.
Wodonga Harvest Festival
Saturday 16th of March, 9:00am – 6:30pm, Wodonga Historic Goods Shed and Railway Station
Journey out of town and visit Wodonga as they open the farm gates for their Harvest festival. Enjoy cooking demonstrations from the hands that grew and picked the feast.
